These are decadent and delicious. Crispy, creamy green fried goodness. Really, they’re almost too good for words.
Beer Battered Fried Avocado Wedges
Originally from the California Avocado Commission
1 cup lager or ale
1 cup all p flour
1 1/2 tsp paprika
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 avocados
oil for frying
1 cup salsa (to serve with them)
Whisk beer, flour, paprika, garlic (I added 1/2 tsp salt) until blended. Let stand at least 2 hours.
Peel avocados, cut each into 6 wedges. Dredge each wedge in batter. Deep fry until golden.
This was great with onions, too! That batter is definitely a keeper for me.
If your avocados are ripe and you refrigerate them, they hold their shape better for cutting.

Oh look! It’s like Avocado heaven….
We have a restaurant here in town that makes this and wraps them in flour tortillas with mango salsa. They call it Fried Avocado Cones. Needless to say, they are extremely popular! Yours look fantastic.
How could we not have all thought of this before?! Pure genius!
Wow Tami, what a fantastic recipe!
hey Laura, don’t let that lack of a deep fryer stop you. I did them in my small cast iron frying pan.
aTx, that sounds incredible!
I hope someone else tries these so I know I’m not overstating their wonderfulness.
Thanks, everybody!
Oh yeah, next time I fire up the deep fryer, I am making those bad boys!
oh my gosh. these are genius!! i try to eat avocados because they are so healthy, but i’ve never been a big fan on their taste and flavor. i’m positive i’d like them fried!!! these look awesome.
Wow, these look deadly, in a good way of course. It’s on my must make list!
Whoa! My husband would be all about this.
I have to make these ASAP! They look so yummy! =)
These are absolutely AMAZING. I can’t believe I haven’t tried this before.
Hopefully my pants still fit tomorrow.
Yay, Manda! I’m so glad you enjoyed them! And I hope your pants still fit, too. They definitely aren’t every day food, but every once in a while.
those look good, but is beer really considered a vegan ingredient? How is the fermentation process different then taking eggs from a chicken. Yeast can suffer too.
I had a go at making these today, they got 150% for flavour but the batter and deep frying was a disaster. The batter did not cling to the avo and so there was one hell of a mess. Any thoughts as to what went wrong- you may have gathered I am pretty much a begginer at this. Cheers
Ian
Ian, it sounds like your batter was too thin. Maybe a little more flour would have helped. I’m sorry they were a mess, but glad they tasted good!
Wow, that looks absolutely delicious! You did a great job presenting the pictures too, I will definitely have to try this recipe when I have some time this weekend
That looks amazing!!
“Yeast can suffer too.”
Dude, please at least try to get your facts straight.
Yeast is a fungus. If yeast isn’t vegan, then neither is any other fungus–including the many varieties of mushrooms you’ve probably never given a second thought to eating.
oh my freakin ears, this looks good!
you have a great blog, btw.
Love avocado. Love beer. Love deep fried anything! This looks wonderful! Think I have a good ale in the cupboard right now. Now to buy some avocados…
This looks so good! I’ll have to try it sometime.
I used to work in kitchen that allowed me a lot of creativity. One day, out of boredom and curiosity, I tossed a wedge of avocado into a fryer. I was surprised at how luscious, nutty, and buttery it came out. I can vouch for the deliciousness of this recipe.
I thought the brewing of beer included the use of fish bladders?
Anon, it depends on the beer.
I thought they were bland… Don’t be mad
Mad? No way! Everyone has different tastes. But I’m sorry you didn’t like them.
I just made them with my boyfriend, I don’t think my oil was hot enough because the batter didn’t stick well and they got quite oily/sat pretty heavy. Hopefully I can make them turn out better next time!
What kind of beer do you recommend using?
Katie, I like to use Magic Hat #9. It’s an almost pale ale, but any ale or lager will work. Thanks!
And I thought beer batered zuccine was good Yummy!
