My very first vegan cookbook was The New Farm Cookbook put out by the Book Publishing Company. Now my copy is tattered and splattered and has lost it's cover, but is still loved. Yesterday, Jim suggested that I get a new copy when I place an order with the Book Publishing Company and I whined (sort of whined, I'm not much of a whiner) a sentimental "NO" and may have even stomped my foot a little. I'm not usually one to turn down new books, but this is different. I know, his point is well taken: my old copy should be framed. But that's just not what books are for...they're for enjoying...poring over pages (no matter how dog-eared) while you imagine the recipes, that sweet anticipation before you actually step foot into the kitchen.
If you didn't guess where this is leading, Dear Reader, let me tell you. Another new book has come into my hands. It's Lick It!, published my the Book Publishing Company.
Well, I confess, the anticipation didn't last long with this book. I flipped through it quickly and started grabbing ingredients. I knew I had what I needed for the Pomegranate Strawberry Sorbet. Almost. I subbed blueberries for strawberries, but that's close enough. Better maybe because I could enjoy it within minutes without an emergency trip to the grocery store. It's sensational tasting, clean and fresh, with just the right amount of sweetness.
This recipe is just scratching the surface. The book is crammed full of creative and delicious sounding frozen treats of all kinds. Sorbets, sherbet, yogurts and of course, ice creams, that you can enjoy straight from the spoon or in a more 'finished' dessert, like sundaes, pies, cakes, or even drumstick cones! The recipes use easy to find, accessible ingredients and are mostly sweetened with natural sweeteners, a big plus! They even have some low fat treats, so nobody has to go without. And slushies, shakes, sauces, pies....you name it.
The wonderful people at the Book Publishing Company must have somehow sensed my attachment to their awesome books. They are so generous that they sent me a copy of Lick It! to share with one of you! Just leave a comment on this post, telling me one of your favorite flavors or anything at all about ice cream, and you'll be entered in the drawing. Please include your email address if it isn't available through your profile. Or be sure to check back. Which brings me to...
Anna, are you out there? If I don't hear from you soon, I'll have to choose another winner. I'd really like to send that PETA book to you!
Summer just got a whole lot cooler, thanks to this vegan ice cream book! Whoever the lucky winner might be, rest assured I'm taking really good care of this book for you until I get my own copy. Really good care!
Good Luck!

ooooh! I want to enter this contest for sure! My mom got me a cute little manual ice cream maker at the thrift store and it's awesome. I've made all sorts of yumminess.
:) amey
That book looks great! I have an ice cream maker at home, and the best batch I've made so far had avocados and lime juice. yum!
my favorite is peppermint stick!
Yum--I love vanilla best. Simple and lame, I know, but sooooo good!
Do you need an ice cream maker for the book? If so, I don't have one, so I guess I don't need to be entered in the contest. But if not, I would LOVE this book!
Courtney
Hmmmm... I never liked strawberry ice cream as a kid, but lately it's all I want to snarf down. I am imagining fresh chopped summer berries in a tasty strawberry ice cream base with chocolate sauce and soya whip. And, just for fun (of course), a sprinkling of Dandies. That's about right...
Oooh! I just got an ice cream maker for my birthday last October, so I cannot wait to really use it this summer.
Chocolate has always been my favorite, but I love all kinds! Most recently I've been sort of obsessed with coconut, and for Thanksgiving I made pumpkin pie ice cream and that was awesome!!
I adore the New Farm cookbook! Hippie and relatively unhealthy 70s vegan food is the best. Mine's looking pretty old also, but that doesn't matter, because now I wanna make ICE CREAM! :)
I want it!!! I just got an ice cream maker and I am totally dying to try all kinds of new ice creams. I like chocolate mint the best, but I totally need to develop a cookie dough one.
I have that cookbook, too, and it may have been my first vegan cookbook, picked up at a garage sale. It looks a lot like yours!
ROFL! I thought you were giving away your old copy of New Farm and was super excited to be going in a competition to win your much loved copy! If you ever do decide to hold a competition for that one though, do let me know!
Ice cream is good though (or is it soy based?). I confess, I'm definitely a vanilla girl at heart (boring I know!)
I prefer homemade sorbetto. I made the best strawberry one just recently and ate the entire thing (a pint of strawberries worth!) in one night. YUM. At least it was mostly healthy. :D
ice cream is pure delicious. and that is my favorite thing about it :) this book looks great!
Oooh, I LOVE ice cream! Anything caramel related really gets me going, but I'm quite the fan of good old Vanilla Bean!
My son loves the peppermint stick ice cream flavor, too. I would love to find out how to make it! My favorites change, but always have been partial to black raspberry.
I just got Lick It and LOVE IT. Try the Cheesecake Ice Cream if you haven't already made it.
So that said, don't enter me in the contest. But whoever wins is one lucky duck.
Congrats!
This is my next step. Finding a publisher. I have to admit, though, it feels great to be done.
Looks like the 3 scoops on the cover are my favorites - chocolate, strawberry, and mint chocolate chip!
Mint chocolate chip has always been my favorite flavor.
I also really like green tea flavored ice cream (I just tried it for the first time a few weeks ago - delicious!)
I haven't met a vegan ice cream flavor I didn't like. Imagine if I made my own!!
I thought about entering the last contest so I was quite excited about you asking for an Anna, of course when I checked I hadn't entered and it's someone else of the same name!
My little boys love ice cream and yogurt though and I'd love to give it a try for them so I am entering this contest!
My fave is any ice cream with chocolate. Or vanilla bean w/ hot fudge. Yum!
I just learned of this book today on amazon. I'm glad you reviewed it because I might have passed it over. Though I'm not one to pass up of good scoop of chocolate non-dairy ice cream!! How many of the recipes require an ice cream maker?
yum i love anything coffee ice cream related!
when my sister got married in italy this summer, there was a "world famous" (ahem) gelato shop in the little tuscan town where they were married that served champagne and pink grapefruit gelato. It was honestly the best thing i have ever tasted ever and I would give anything to re-create it.
beyond that, i love mango and pineapple and coconut. and vanilla, and...
I have a handcrank ice cream maker but never have had much success with it making vegan ice cream so I'd love to check out this book!
Courtney, the book offers directions on how to make the recipes without an ice cream maker. They seem straightforward and warn you that it takes more effort, but I'm sure it would be worth it.
Keep 'em coming!
I know exactly how you feel about your old book, Tami! I think I would have framed it. I have some old books that look really bad, but they are still on my shelves.
My favourite ice cream flavour is chocolate!
aahh.. Tami!! Sorry, long time no comment huh? You're such a little temptress! MMmm... I just made amazing coconut mint chip ice cream! Off to do a post catch up!
I love icecream. Chocolate's my favorite. I enjoy making it in my ice cream maker, but could use a few new recipes. And I love New Farm Vegetarian Cookbook. It's one of my favorites.
Mmmm, ice cream sounds so refreshing on a hot summer day! I love vanilla bean ice cream - simple but delicious (and it has to be vanilla bean, not just vanilla or french vanilla) :O! And I love pumpkin ice cream too!
My favourite ever is pistachio! and I've had a wonderful banana icecream before (pre vegan) which was loaded with real banana - so flavourful and creamy. On;y thing is, if I won, I'd have to buy an icecream maker ;)
I LOVE mango sorbet!
we love making homemade ice cream -- looking forward to lightening things up this summer. can't wait to read cathe's book...
ooh, looks great! i had chai gelato this weekend, and it was very delicious.
My pregnant body loves lemon sorbet!
I've never met an ice cream I didn't like though, except maybe bubblegum. Chewing gum and then swallowing ice cream requires too much coordination.
Yummy...I love good ol' vanilla!
Favorite ice cream has to be pistachio, mainly because I can't get it anywhere near me! Maybe I'll find a new fave with this book? Who knows...
As a child I loved "vallina" (vanilla) the best, but now I like something more unusual, and citrusy, if possible. I think I would like to try to make a vegan ice cream with pomegranate juice, or lime, ginger, and honey. I want to "Lick It!"
Oh, this would be amazing~
(Wow, avocado and lime juice does sound delicious) Vegan cookie dough is good, as is mint n' chocolate chip. I've never made ice cream, and I've been unable to find this veganized, but my favorite from my non-vegan days was pistachio and blackberry <3
My e-mail address is urlopezfuentes@ursinus.edu
I really should make myself a vegan Peanut Buster Parfait sometime. That was the only thing I'd order from Dairy Queen when I was a kid. I miss those.
Please enter me in this contest too! I think my favorite ice cream is very vanilla with whatever I'm in the mood to add in, fruits, chocolate chips, nuts.....
i love ice cream! and homemade ice cream is the best. my favorite flavors involve coffee or peanut butter
Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate FTW! Thank you for the opportunity to win this!
Congratulations, lola! You're the winner. Please send me your mailing address. Thanks!
