Book Review and Contest: Speed Vegan!

It’s not often that I do almost back-to-back book giveaways, but since I have several hot new books, here goes! This latest book is from the Book Publishing Company. They seem to just keep cranking out the titles, which is great news for vegans.

Speed Vegan is by Alan Roettinger who appears to be a personal chef. Given the way he blends his flavor profiles, it’s no surpise that the inside back cover says he has cooked for “…high-profile clients from entertainers to presidents.” He’s definitely got his own style. The book opens with information on equipping your kitchen and stocking your pantry, as well as a chapter of “Jumpstarts” that bring instant flavor to your cooking such as chipotle mayo and roasted garlic puree.

The recipe chapters start with Snacks. I opted to make an open face eggplant and seitan sandwich, which I loved and Jim thought was so-so. Interestingly, Mr. Roettinger says he has had little experience with seitan and tempeh. Perhaps because of that, his recipes that use them are very straightforward and basic. In the sandwich that I chose, that let the inherent characteristics of the seitan come through. A quick look at the Tempeh Sticks strikes me the same way.

The Salad chapter is a big one. Considering that the note under the Grilled Radicchio Salad said it was irresistible, that’s the one I tried. And he was right. I made a half recipe and it would have easily fed 4 if it wasn’t so good.

From the Pasta and Grains chapter, we tried the Strozzapreti with Mushrooms, which made the most of fresh, delicious mushrooms. I subbed penne. Overall, the dish was as you’d expect but well executed. The book wraps up with a Vegetables and Legumes chapter followed by Sweets.

The book tends to use more oil than most cooks do these days. I guess that shouldn’t be surprising considering that the author also wrote a book on omega 3’s. It’s easy to reduce the amount of oil and I did in the recipes I tried. To us, it didn’t compromise the flavors. Sometimes the recipes could have had a wee bit more detail in the prep notes. For example, in the Strozzapreti it doesn’t say to cut the mushrooms, but the photo shows them cut. It’s a very minor nitpick and one that a common sense cook can easily overcome.

Originally, it was the cover of the book that drew me to it. The subtitle promises “Quick, Easy Recipes with a Gourmet Twist”, and the book delivers on flavor.

Thanks to the Book Publishing Company, I’m sending this copy to one lucky reader. All you have to do is comment to this post telling me if you’ve ever gotten a speeding ticket. I’ll do the drawing early next week. Good luck – oh, and international entries are welcome.

No speeding ticket yet! Hopefully it stays that way.

I have most definitely had speeding tickets. In fact, you know how sometimes cops pull someone over and let him/her go with a warning? That’s never happened to me; every single time I’ve been pulled over, it’s resulted in a ticket. Maybe my luck will change with this contest!

    Never had a speeding ticket.

I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket, though I probably should have. I may have cried.

    I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket – but I don’t have a car, so it’s a good way to avoid them :)

    Totally got a speeding ticket

  7. Posted April 29, 2010 at 6:37 pm | Permalink

Driving for just over a year and no ticket so far!

I’m 30, and I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket! I drive old, slow cars.

  9. Posted April 29, 2010 at 7:21 pm | Permalink

Driving 22 years, and one speeding ticket in that time.

  10. Posted April 29, 2010 at 7:51 pm | Permalink

2 speeding tickets, but they were far enough apart that I got to take traffic school both times. The last one was 10 years ago, while on the honeymoon road trip. I told the cop afterward that it was our honeymoon and he gave me a, “you shoulda told me before” look, and I felt like a boob.

I’m old and a much slower driver now, so I need to cook faster.

    No speeding tickets, thankfully!

I’ve been pulled over twice in my life (I’m 45), but no speeding tickets yet!

  13. Posted April 29, 2010 at 8:02 pm | Permalink

Nope, no speeding tickets for me. Most likely I’ll not get one later either, as I have neither got a driver’s license nor a vehicle…

  14. Posted April 29, 2010 at 8:07 pm | Permalink

yep, got my last one about 5 years ago on my way home from work. Very embarrassing, saw the cop in my rearview mirror but couldn’t find a place to pull over due to mountains of snow on the side of the road. He chewed me out for that.

i got one on the way to my parents’ freshman year of college. i didn’t want them to know about it, so i got up super early the morning of my courtdate, drove two hours to court, paid the fine, drove back to school, and came back a few months later for traffic school … it was all very hush hush. my parents (and my insurance) never found out … tee hee.

  16. Posted April 29, 2010 at 8:17 pm | Permalink

Unfortunately, i’ve been caught on radar speeding.

  17. Posted April 29, 2010 at 8:28 pm | Permalink

Yes, way back in New Zealand, many moons ago. In a Mazda 323 of all car!

  18. Posted April 29, 2010 at 9:09 pm | Permalink

I got 2 speeding tickets within a few months of getting my driver’s license, but since then I’ve been lucky!

  19. Posted April 29, 2010 at 9:19 pm | Permalink

I have never gotten a speeding ticket, because I lack a car. And a license. Heck, I don’t even have a learners permit! My theory is that I am quite content to extend my being-chauffeured days for as long as possible (aren’t I a gem?). :)

  20. Posted April 29, 2010 at 9:42 pm | Permalink

I am a glutton for punishment as I never win anything, but I cannot resist entering! I love me a good cookbook contest :-) Sadly, I recently got my first speeding ticket ever–something I NEVER want to repeat ever ever again…

PS what about you??? Have you gotten a speeding ticket?!?

  21. Posted April 29, 2010 at 9:45 pm | Permalink

Unfortunately, yes, but I have license to speed in the kitchen.

  22. Posted April 29, 2010 at 10:01 pm | Permalink

I never have gotten a speeding ticket and attempting to keep it that way. I have given up driving though, as doing it in Boston is just terrible.

  23. Posted April 29, 2010 at 10:13 pm | Permalink

I got a speeding ticket in the middle of nowhere in Oregon! It was awful-the first time I was pulled over. I definitely cried. Luckily, that was my only one and it was 4 years ago.

  24. Posted April 29, 2010 at 10:15 pm | Permalink

Yep! Got my first one on the way to work! The police had staked out a busy street.

  25. Posted April 29, 2010 at 10:54 pm | Permalink

I got a ticket for speeding through the subway turnstile without paying.

  26. Posted April 29, 2010 at 11:16 pm | Permalink

I have driven for over 50 years. No, I’m not kidding – wish I were! Anyway, my one and only speeding ticket was in a very remote area of Wyoming. Turns out there was a police training facility there, and train them they did. Unfortunately for me. Never before, never since! I’d love the book and promise I would use it.

  27. Posted April 29, 2010 at 11:33 pm | Permalink

    I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket, and I don’t drive, so I probably won’t.

  28. Posted April 29, 2010 at 11:56 pm | Permalink

Yes, I have gotten a speeding ticket…been a while and hope to keep it that way!

  29. Posted April 29, 2010 at 11:56 pm | Permalink

Oh yes, I’ve had a speeding ticket which I didn’t deserve but another time I didn’t get one when I DID deserve it. So I guess it evened out. Karma maybe??

  30. Posted April 30, 2010 at 12:14 am | Permalink

No speeding tickets yet! I’ve been pulled over for speeding once, but got off without the ticket. Whew!

I’ve been driving 26 years, so yeah, I’ve caught a speeding ticket. Cried my way out of one too. Not on purpose. I was just tired and overwhelmed and it was the last straw. :-)

  34. Posted April 30, 2010 at 7:16 am | Permalink

Yes, got one years ago. I thought that the car looked so old and slow that there would appear to be no way I could have been speeding…but I was wrong.

Oh, sure have! But I was driving a vintage car at the time, so I asked for the photographic proof and now I have a nice photo as a memento!

  36. Posted April 30, 2010 at 2:34 pm | Permalink

After 5 years in this area I got pulled over for speeding while passing in the passing lane…
Still a ticket. Yikes. And around here, it’s over $300!
    Oh well…
A new cookbook would be awesome to lift away to ticket blues. :)

  37. Posted April 30, 2010 at 2:51 pm | Permalink

Yep, 2 speeding tickets. Both on the same stretch of road…8 years apart. Then I got an FOP card and haven’t had a ticket since! I’m planning on coming to your book signing at Mac’s in June! Really looking forward to meeting you live and in person!

Ah, yes, speeding tickets! Guilty here. But we were on the highway! And no one else was around! And we were going to Montreal and I was tired after 5 hours of driving! (Yes, those are all excuses). 😉

  44. Posted May 1, 2010 at 2:14 pm | Permalink

never ever! but seeing as i don’t have a car and NEVER drive, it’s not that unexpected.

  45. Posted May 1, 2010 at 2:50 pm | Permalink

I can’t believe this (since I speed all the time) but I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I burst into tears when I get pulled over (sorry, I can’t it). But I did get a ticket for “failure to yield right of way” when I was 16, turning left, and some other girl from my highschool was going about 60 in a the 35 zone, so I couldn’t see her before i turned…. um, we’ll pretend that I don’t have pent up rage about this about a decade after it happened…..

none, thankfully, though I did get a ticket for an accident that was totally my fault.

My husband, on the other hand…
