Chicago Food!

Since it’s been about two weeks since we’ve been in Chicago, I guess it’s time to finally post some photos of the amazing food we had there. Here are some of the food highlights. Ready?

Raw Red Pepper Gazpacho, Karyn’s on Green
Try as I might, I’m just not really that into raw foods. But this soup is a knock-out and I’d order it again and again.

Buffalo “Chicken” Sandwich, Karyn’s on Green

This sandwich is a little camera shy, but I had to include the photo because the tofu “chicken” had an amazing texture and terrific flavor.

Philly Cheesesteak, Karyn’s on Green

An ooey gooey sandwich that was miles better than the vegan cheesesteaks we had in Philadelphia last year. Even the bread was delicious.

BBQ Ribz, Karyn’s Cooked

These are one of my perennial favorites. I’ve enjoyed them every trip to Chicago and don’t want to end the trend for obvious reasons.

Halfpipe, Chicago Diner

This is a sandwich I wish I’d ordered. It was Jim’s and he shared, but still. Under the fried onion rings (!!!), lettuce and tomatoes, there is a “chicken” fried seitan steak. It’s a special at the Diner in honor of Shaun White, and it deserves an award, too.

Dr. K’s Cure All Soup, Amitabul

This was my first experience with Korean food, and it was love at first taste. We enjoyed this meal with Liz and Matthew. Believe it or not, we had one order of the soup, split 4 ways. Even on a 90 degree day, this soup had perfect heat and balance. We followed this up with an order of soy pancakes that came with 12-year old miso, and two other entrees that we split. This place will be on our list for every trip to Chicago to come.

Somehow we lost some of our photos, but rest assured that I had the famous Radical Reuben at the Chicago Diner and their incredible wingz, too. Just looking at these photos makes me anxious for another trip to Chicago.

Not only did we have great food, but more importantly, we had a wonderful opportunity to meet a whole group of awesome vegans for lunch. Liz, Kim, Kelly, Vegan Aide, Shannon, Marla, Electric Claire, Red Badger, and everyone else, thank you for making it happen. Same time, next year?

Upcoming:

Thursday,July 29th at 7:00 PM, I will be discussing veganism and signing copies of American Vegan Kitchen at Joseph Beth Books, Legacy Village, Lyndhurst, Ohio.

And…soon…a book contest.
