Cookbook Challenge + Contest!

Woohoo! Over at the Post Punk Kitchen, another Cookbook Challenge is underway. These cookalongs are always a blast, but this one is especially exciting to me since American Vegan Kitchen is the book of the week for February 28th. If you’re new to these, the idea is simple. Just grab the featured cookbook and make 3 (or any number) of dishes from it that are new to you, then share your results in the book of the week thread at the PPK. It’s a great way to brush some dust off your books, get motivated and try some new recipes. Here’s the complete schedule.

January 10 – Appetite for Reduction
January 17 – Veganomicon
January 24 – Urban Vegan
January 31 – Vegan with a Vengeance
February 7 – Eat, Drink & Be Vegan
February 14 – FREE choice week – Choose any cookbook. Dessert cookbook will be Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World or other.
February 21 – 500 Vegan Recipes
February 28 – American Vegan Kitchen
March 7 – Yellow Rose Recipes
March 14 – Viva Vegan
March 21 – Vegan Brunch
March 28 – Final Week! Free choice – choose any cookbook. Dessert cookbook will be Vegan Cookies Invade your Cookie Jar or other.

For this week, I made the Red Thai Tofu and the Unfried Rice. The tofu is incredibly easy and delicious, even without the basil. Judging from the thread, this recipe tempted lots of people. The Unfried Rice is good, too, especially with some extra vegetables added.

Of course, since I have a recipe for baked onion rings, I had to try the one in Appetite for Reduction. They were also a hit. The sandwich is probably my most-made recipe from Veganomicon, the Vietnamese Dip.

Interested in participating but don’t have some of the books? You can always check the Amazon “look inside” feature, or see if some of the recipes are already online. Here are some links for American Vegan Kitchen recipes. There may be more out there.

Country Skillet
Summer Waffles
Sweet and Crunchy French Toast
Fifty/Fifty Buns
All-American Incrediburgers
Seitan Brew Stew
Tuna Free Noodle Casserole
Crispy Bottom Peanut Butter Pie

And….since I’m so thrilled to be part of the cookalong, I’ll be giving away a few copies of American Vegan Kitchen here over the next month. If you don’t have a copy yet, leave a comment on this blog post. If you’re feeling chatty, tweet it, blog it or FB the contest and leave another comment that you’ve done so here for additional chances to win. Random.org will choose one lucky winner next week. International readers are welcome. Don’t forget to check back to see if you’ve won, or to enter the next time.

Happy Cooking!

This one is still on my wish list – there are some days when I wish so badly I could just stop at the corner diner for some good old fashioned home cooked diner food. Guess I’ll have to make my kitchen the new Ma’s Diner. :)

I would really like a copy of your book. It would be nice to have it to use for my vegan Mondays…since I have to ‘compromise’ with the omnivores in the family, I cook vegetarian the rest of the week.

I’ve been on a cookbook-diet as I’ve got so many that I don’t get to try as many recipes as I’d like to, but I’d be happy to make an exception for your book. It’s high on my want list.
I love the idea of trying a couple of recipes from a different book each week.
    Great idea.

hello hello! i am too lazy, undisciplined and unorganized to make three recipes from a book in one week. we eat a lot of leftovers and salad around here. that’s probably why the challenge exists in the first place tho. sign me up for vegan appetite!

If you don’t have a particular cookbook, check your local library!! Our county library has many vegan and vegetarian cookbooks AND they are responsive to what their customers want. If you don’t see it on the shelf, ask them to buy it — you just might be surprised.

Would love to have your cookbook! I am new to veganism and don’t have a cookbook yet! I would love for yours to be my first! Please, please!!! I will tweet and Facebook your blog…Happy Cooking!

How lame am I? I didn’t even know about the challenge. I even own several of the books they’ve used so far – but I don’t have this one! Although I’ve got to say I’m almost surprised that Vegan Fire & Spice wasn’t one of the choices as I think it’s my favorite (so far). Well, I’m on my way to PPK to see what this is all about. Thanks.
