For various reasons, it’s taken me longer than I would have liked to review Hearty Vegan Meals for Monster Appetites. But I’m doing it now, and that’s what counts, right? Especially since you’ve got a chance to win this book.
First, a disclaimer: I am currently working on a sandwich book with Celine Steen who is one of the authors of this book. Joni Marie Newman is the other talented cook behind the book. That didn’t color my perceptions, but I thought I’d mention it upfront.
Flipping through the book, it’s actually hard to see where to start. That’s a good thing. So to get down to business, I decided to make the Baked Cinnamon Sugar Donut Holes. These are phenomenal. So easy… sooo good. The photo up top was taken when they were just out of the oven. The sugary topping kind of soaks into the muffin after a while, making them even yummier, but I didn’t get any photos for you. They’re that good.

Next up, White Panini Rolls. Making bread isn’t that much effort and is always so worth it. These rolls are no exception. Next time, I’ll make them into 8 instead of 6. Another winner.
What to do with those rolls? The book suggests using Tofu Jerky for a sandwich filling. OK! The jerky was fantastic. Loved these and can see making them often. Perfectly chewy and delicious.

To go with the sandwich (as if it needed anything), we had the Sweet Peppercorn Cole Slaw. I admit that I added some minced onion, because I think that cabbage loves onions.

I also made the Cinnamon Swirl Bread. It wasn’t the prettiest as my swirl separated. I didn’t bother with photos, and it’s just as well since it disappeared quickly.
With colder weather approaching (sorry, Mom… it happens this time of year…), it’s the perfect time to delve into Hearty Vegan Meals. What I’ve posted here is just the tip of the iceberg. One lucky reader will win a copy of this book. Just tell me one comfort food dish you find yourself craving, any time of year! Shipping worldwide is ok. The winner will be drawn randomly on November 3rd. Good luck!
Update: #32, pbandkelly, is the winner! Please email me your mailing address so you can get cooking with Hearty Vegan!

I often miss poutine (french fries with gravy and cheese) and I could eat lasagna any day.
I just won your book (American Vegan Kitchen) at a giveaway yesterday. I’m so happy =)
Nothing is more comforting than a plate of “buttermilk” biscuits and white gravy, any time of any day.
This book looks so great!
I find myself craving vegan mac and cheese all the freakin’ time!
Bread. Bread with soup. Bread in any shape, texture or nationality. Bread anytime, anywhere.
Right now bread and I are on a break. Not sure h
who is sadder, but the love handles are shrinking.
Thanks for the contest!
I miss that crappy Kraft mac n cheese that’s in the blue box, processed and everything. Then I remember how horrible it makes me feel after eating it, and I get a vegan version instead.
It’s always mac n cheese or mashed potatoes. Even in the summer.
I am not sure why but I am craving bourguignon and oatmeal raisin cookies these days! Not at all the same, but both are delicious. Looks like a wonderful cookbook!
This cookbook sounds great! One of my favorite comfort foods would have to be deep fried seitan…on a sandwich, with mashed potatoes, whatever!
wow, that all looks so tasty. It’s really so helpful to see pictures from cookbooks! Even though I haven’t had breakfast yet, that tofu jerky looks amazing right now. My number one comfort food is *definitely* bread. I don’t let myself eat much bread, because I’m sort of like a crack addict around it… but every once in a while I get / make a loaf of bread and let myself go nuts. Mmmm!
A big pile of mashed potatoes is the first thing that always comes to mind when I think of comfort food. The husband and I LOVE potatoes, and they are just so easy and so tasty!
Mac & Cheese.
BTW – those white panini rolls look amazing.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup.
I was gonna say mac n cheeze, until i saw that grilled cheeze and tomato soup comment.
omg, do i love grilled cheeze and tomato soup.
i’d love to win a copy of this!

It’s definitely gotta be vegan mac and cheese, for sure. A liberal dose of nooch with shell pasta to provide little spots of refuge for sauce at it travels to my belly!
Mac n’ Cheese with peas. I could eat this any day.
Stuffing. I love stuffing. With gravy. Oh yes.
Oh yum…everything looks and sounds so good! Sounds like a great book!
Pasta…I’m all about eating pasta, especially spaghetti.
My vegan comfort food is lasagna. I use daiya cheese, whole wheat noodles and make a faux ricotta – all this makes for a perfect comfort food. I can’t wait to try out some of your recipes! Thanks for the chance to win a free copy.
Mac & cheese and my Mom’s meatloaf. Thankfully I can make yummy mac & cheese w/daiya and/or nutritional yeast but still haven’t found the perfect vegan meatloaf recipe — maybe this year!

Spaghetti and garlic bread.
oooh mama.
Before, (in my omnivorous times) it was with ground beef… now (after-veganification) I LOVE it loaded with veggies and seitan “meat”balls. YUM.
Mashed potatoes and gravy! All the time!
Green bean casserole…complete with crunchy french fried onions on top
Definitely spaghetti with spicy sauce and vegan “meatballs”!
warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream! yum!
My home made hummus. Hummus on sandwiches, hummus as a side dish in meals, hummus as a dip sauce, hummus with almost anything…
Pizza is my comfort food all year round. I could eat it every day.
Vegan pot pie!
Pasta! I could eat it at every meal, but I do restrain myself (most of the time).
savory gravy and stuffing… inside, beside, on top of anything:) mmm…
You know, I kind of assumed that Hearty Vegan would be full of heavy, fatty foods, but seeing this review I see that it’s just full of good food! Around this time of year I crave creamy casseroles and chili.
I always find myself wanting mac & cheese at this time of year, it’s perfect cold weather food.
My favorite comfort food ever is mac & cheese. Usually a recipe I have from the Soul Vegetarian restaurant.
Would love to have this book!
Nothing is more comforting to me than vegan mac and cheese.
My mom’s scalloped potatoes…totally not vegan but I sure miss them!
The cold, gray fall weather makes me want to eat chili and cornbread every night.
My favorite comfort foods are soup and potatoes (fries, mashed, baked, whatever!)
Ooh the panini rolls look great. I love bread.
Besides bread (or perhaps WITH bread), I’m always craving chili.
Pasta with Mom’s slow-simmered pasta sauce…love it!
Mashed potatoes and gravy is a weakness, but I find a hearty veggie soup wins out.
The best comfort foods are tofu and potatoes
I’m happy to have found your very excellent article! I agree with some of your readers and will eagerly look forward to your coming updates. Just saying thanks will not just be adequate.
British Food
Oh my heck! That panini is dreamy. I am so happy that it is mashed potato and gravy season. This is one of my ultimate comfort foods.
I crave so many different comforting things but they always seem to be something breadlike. biscuits, bagels, homemade bread, I love it all! Also, mac n cheese, so creamy, gooey good.
favorite comfort food, geez, hmm. probably boiled potatoes with parsley – weird but I think that makes me feel better about life in general.

Sounds like a great cookbook! So glad to have found your site.
An Unrefined Vegan
Banana bread with margarine is wonderful in the wintertime. The loaf never lasts more that 24 hours in this house!
I crave a great hot sandwich any time of year … like a reuben or Philly no-steak sandwich. I love those types of meals. They hit the SPOT!
Tater tot casserole!
Ah, I’m having a hard enough time deciding what to make already, and you have to throw more delicious ideas in the ring! I’m definitely planning on some sort of donut, at least… Must get moving on my own review now!
