Harissa Grilled Tofu for Food Network Monthly

July has just flown by! With temperatures in the 90s and crazy humidity, I haven’t even been keen on grilling. Hard to believe, I know, since it’s one of my favorite things. We’ve been more likely to eat cold food (yay sandwiches, salads, and gazpacho!) or make-it-in-the-morning food. But I couldn’t let the month get away without my entry into the Food Network Monthly Project. 

Harissa Grilled Tofu

Serves 3 to 4
As written, this tofu is only moderately spicy. Feel free to increase the harissa for more adventurous palates. 

1 pound extra-firm tofu, drained, pressed, and cut into 8 slabs
1/2 cup vegetable broth
1/4 cup dry red wine
1 tablespoon harissa paste
1 tablespoon olive oil
Juice from 1/2 lemon
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
Generous pinch ground black pepper
Dash Liquid Smoke

Combine all ingredients except the tofu in a 13 X 9 inch baking dish. Put the tofu in the marinade, turning to coat it. Cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.

For an outdoor grill, grill the tofu over medium heat on an oiled grill, or grill sheet. For indoor grilling, heat an oiled grill pan over medium-high heat. For both, grill the tofu until well marked, turn one-quarter turn, and grill until marked. Turn the tofu over and repeat. Baste the tofu with any remaining marinade as it cooks.

For our dinner, we had greens and couscous with onions, corn, and a bit of the marinade to tie the plate together.

    Hi in2, thanks! It depends. Sometimes I get it from the ethnic aisle of the big chain grocery store (Wegman’s) and sometimes I make my own. The recipe is in Grills Gone Vegan. Is it something you’d be interested in making? If so, I’ll post it.

    At some point I’m going I need to figure what this harrisa paste is you seem to be so fond of, because I have a feeling I’m gonna like it. Your grilled tofu always looks so perfect.
